We have been in love with Italy for years, drawn to the sun, the sea, the culture, the food, the friendly people….the list goes on. Over time, we have travelled all over the country, from the rolling hills of Tuscany to the vibrant soul of Sicily, from the peaceful charm of Umbria to the dramatic beauty of Amalfi coast. But it was in Puglia that we felt at home. The endless olive groves, the turquoise sea, and the jewel-like small towns - each one with its own charm and history - captured our hearts.
In 2022, we finally found our future new home, an abandoned small farmhouse, a masseria, tucked away in the beautiful countryside of Canale di Pirro, in the north part of Valle d’Itria.
After more than three years of careful, sustainable renovation, Casa Cali now is a space that blends the simplicity and warmth of a traditional Pugliese masseria with a northern design sensibility - rooted in our Canadian background. Clean lines, natural materials, rich textures and an emphasis on light, space and function guided our choices. We wanted it to feel calm, grounded and deeply connected to nature.
We collaborated closely with local artisans whose craftsmanship brought warmth and authenticity to every corner - from hand-fitted stone floors to the lime plastered walls, from crafted woodwork to hand shaped wrought iron details.
Sustainability was at the heart of our project from day one. We cleaned and reshaped the original stone floors throughout the house, preserving the history underfoot. For the garden patio, we repurposed local unloved stones in the area, giving them a new life. We worked with local artisans who used traditional techniques passed down from generations to restore and rebuild the house with care and heart. The home is powered by solar energy, insulated for efficiency, and designed to work with the climate, not against it.
It has been a true labour of love - from us, from the artisans, and from everyone who touched this house with care and intention. It is more than just a home - it is a sanctuary. While it is our sanctuary, it is also a place we hope to share - with friends, with travellers, and with anyone looking to slow down, to enjoy the beauty of Puglia, and to seek a sense of belonging, if only just for a little while.
Welcome to our little corner of Puglia - we are so happy to share it with you.
